Investing in Our Schools: Building Safe, Sustainable and Inspiring Learning Environments Across Venn Academy Trust
At Venn Academy Trust, we believe that high-quality learning environments are fundamental to pupil wellbeing, staff morale and strong educational outcomes. Across our family of schools, we take a proactive, strategic approach to estates and building improvements—ensuring that every setting is safe, warm, welcoming and fit for the future.
Over recent years, and particularly throughout 2024–25, the Trust has delivered an ambitious programme of building and estates improvement projects. These works reflect our commitment to maintaining consistently high standards across all schools, while also addressing sustainability, energy efficiency and long-term value.
Long-Term Planning with Safety and Sustainability at the Core
Our estates strategy is underpinned by detailed condition surveys, energy assessments and risk analysis. This allows us to prioritise investment where it will have the greatest impact—whether addressing health and safety risks, improving thermal efficiency, or enhancing accessibility and inclusion.
A significant example of this approach is the Venn Boulevard Centre Weather Tightness Project, a multi-year programme running from 2023 to 2025 . As a listed building, the Centre required sensitive but essential intervention. Prior to the works, deteriorating brickwork, failing windows and water ingress created safety risks and poor energy performance. Through successful capital funding and careful planning, the building has now been restored to its original character while becoming significantly warmer, quieter and more energy efficient—providing a safer and more pleasant environment for pupils and staff alike.
Delivering Improvement Across the Trust
Alongside major capital projects, the Trust has continued to invest in targeted improvement works across multiple schools, ensuring equity of provision and consistent standards.
During the Summer Term 2025, estates projects were delivered across a range of sites , including:
- Mountbatten Primary School, where insulated external render was installed to address cold internal conditions and improve energy efficiency.
- New Pastures Primary School, where classrooms were reconfigured to better support younger pupils and nursery provision, alongside new flooring, redecoration and improved accessibility.
- Marshland Primary Academy, benefiting from resurfaced pathways and car parks to remove safety hazards, as well as a full kitchen refurbishment to modern food hygiene standards.
- Brooke Primary Academy, where extensive pathway and drainage works eliminated pooling water and slip risks.
- Milton School, where an under-used playground was transformed into a vibrant outdoor space featuring climbing equipment, a MUGA and a dedicated reading area.
Each project was carefully scheduled to minimise disruption to learning, with the majority of works taking place during holiday periods wherever possible.
Improving Everyday Spaces for Pupils
We also recognise that smaller, high-impact projects can make a significant difference to pupils’ daily experience. During Easter 2025, Brooke Primary Academy underwent a full toilet refurbishment . The outdated facilities were replaced with modern, hygienic and durable fittings, improved layouts and high-quality finishes—creating clean, safe and dignified spaces that better meet pupils’ needs.
These improvements demonstrate our attention to detail and our belief that every part of the school environment matters.
Responsible Use of Resources
All estates projects are delivered within the Trust’s wider financial and operational strategies, ensuring strong governance, value for money and long-term sustainability. Investment decisions are aligned with building condition data and capital planning, allowing us to reinvest savings and efficiencies back into our schools .
Sustainability is a key consideration throughout this work—from improving thermal performance and reducing energy loss, to better drainage, waste reduction and durable materials that extend the life of school buildings.
A Commitment to High Standards for Every School
Whether restoring a historic building, upgrading a playground, resurfacing pathways or modernising internal facilities, our message is clear: every Venn school deserves a high-quality environment that supports learning, wellbeing and pride in place.
By taking a proactive, planned and values-driven approach to estates management, Venn Academy Trust continues to ensure that all pupils and staff learn and work in spaces that are safe, sustainable and designed to support success—now and for the future.
